What does an Agricultural Chemist do?

An agricultural chemist analyzes chemical or biochemical compounds used in agriculture. He/she uses his/her knowledge to create, purify, or modify chemicals for soil improvement and increased product output. For example, an agricultural chemist would synthesize or change fertilizers and insecticides. They also oversee quality and environmental control, as well as medical treatment.

What type of educational background is needed?

A bachelor or masters degree in agriculture or a related science is typically required, as well as a membership (or membership eligibility) in a provincial institute of agrology.

Two agricultural chemists take soil samples in a field.

What is an average salary?

The average salary is in the mid-20,000s to mid-30,000.

What are the working conditions?

An agricultural chemist works in either a lab or simulated environment, such as a test field or waterway.

What is the job outlook?

The departments of agricultural chemistry are shrinking, and so it is becoming increasingly competitive. Many companies are merging, and soon, only a few companies will dominate the entire field. However, while job opportunities in agricultural chemistry are decreasing, there is great growth in biotechnology and bioengineering.
