What is a fire fighter? As a firefighter you perform work against and for the prevention of fires. You are stationed at a ladder, and when you hear the bell, that means you are on the go to help with an emergency. You are usually working under a shift commander and/or head of your ladder.

What are some typical duties of a fire fighter? Some typical tasks of a fire fighter include: responding to alarms, drives and operates equipment, rescue, advancing lines, entry, ventilation extrication, and emergency medical care of victims. They perform clean-up, overhaul work and establish temporary utility services. They check fire hydrant flows, makes fire code inspections of business establishments, and prepares pre-fire plans. A fire fighter participates in training and instruction programs when offered, or assigned. Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, pumps out the basements, inspects for gas leaks, inspects chimmneys, etc. They also conduct station tours for the public, school, and community.

Does this job deal with chemicals? If so, why and how? Yes, this is a job that deals with chemicals. You need to be able to find out what caused the fire, whether or not chemicals were involved, how to put the fire out without sparking more flame, and how to prevent it from ever happening again. They need to know if there are any chemicals that could possibly harm an indiviual in the work, or school, area. So, fire fighters have to be able to distinguish a harmful chemcial to a non-harmful chemical.

What are the qualifications, and salary in order to apply to become a fire fighter? As a Boston fire fighter, you need to be atleast 19 years of age, meaning have graduated high school, and be a resident of the city of Boston for atleast one year. The average salary of a fire fighter is between $28,000 - $30,000, and up to $52, 000 with experience. These qualifications may change between a city and/or state, so check with your local fire department.

What are some of the working conditions of being a fire fighter? The working conditions include working with a team, your ladder, and working independently, trying to find ways to work through the fire. As any job, every indiviual has a different idea or opinion to approach any situation. Usually work would be outside, of course, fighting fires, or helping others.

Is it hard to get a job being a fire fighter? The BFD (Boston Fire Department) hires about 50 fire fighters a year. You can never have too many people trying to help others, but more and more people are looking into this job field. Again, it's best to go to your local fire department to ask such questions.

This is one of the most famous pictures of 2002. It shows three FDNY (Fire Department New York) fire fighters, after the World Trade Center NYC tradgedy.
