What is this occupation?

Laser Technicians assemble, test, maintain, and operate different kinds of lasers and systems that use lasers. Lasers use a beam of optical or light power that has been converted from electrical power. Laser technicians work with the assembly and production of laser systems and laser devices, they prepare them for maintenance and operation, troubleshooting, repair, research, development, sales and service.

How is it related to chemistry?

The job of a laser technician is related to chemistry because they have to prepare lasers that will be used in medical surgery.

What educational background is needed?

The educational background needed to be a laser technician is usually a two-year technical school or a two-year course at a community college. During these two years, students spend more time in the lab than they they do in the classroom. Often in the second year of study, a student will take part in special laser-related projects. Aside from this two-year experience, students must have a general interest in math and science, and enjoy lab-type projects.

What is an average salary?

An average salary is anywhere from $22,000 a year for a starting laser technician, to $40,000 for an experienced or private laser technician.

What are the working conditions?

As I said before, there are many different kinds of laser technicians. The working conditions vary from case to case. They may work in labratories, hospital operating rooms, construction sites and manufacturing plants.A stationary laser technician who assembles and operates lasers in the same place every day would stay there all the time, there would not be very much travelling. Some laser technicians travel around the country, if they work in sales or marketing. Also, other laser technicians work in a lab or on a production site

What is the job outlook?

There are many jobs in this field, and they are all very different. Some laser technicians work in labs or offices, while some travel and hold service positions. The outlook of oppurtunities for laser technicians was good in the 1990's, and still continues to be. This is due to the continued growth in the industry.
