What Do Material Scientists Do?

Materials scientists arrange elements into certain microstructures and they look to see how these influence the certain properties that the materials contain. They experiment to find ways to make chemicals useful. They have recently engineered many new materials by changing the properties. They have tried to improve things such as paint, medicine, makeup, and automobiles. By changing the properties of such things, they combine new atom molecules to produce a product that is in some way an improvement from the last one. This could be because it is safer to someone's health or to the environment. Material science is related to chemistry because it deals with how the structures of materials can relate to their properties.

How Do I Go About Finding a Career In Materials Science?

To become a materials scientist you must obtain a college degree in materials science or something like chemistry or physics. If you are interested in doing research jobs you must first obtain a Ph.D.. Employers will usually look for this or a master's degree among interested graduates. Students studying to become materials scientists usually like math and science. They also like to work independently and study details.

How Much Do Materials Scientists Make?

.The average salary for a materials scientist usually depends on the amount of time that a person spent in school. There was a survey in the year 2000 that concluded that those in the field who had obtained a bachelor's degree earned $33,500 a year, a master's earned $44,100 a year, and a Ph.D. earned $64,500 a year. So a degree higher could make a big difference money-wise.

What is the job like?

Materials scientists usually work in factories, but there are some who research outdoors. They give specific orders to plant workers. They then watch the process to make sure they end up with the correct product. They test the samples of these products and record their results. They work in manufacturing firms and the chemical manufacturing industry. Here they produce things such as plastic, drugs, soap, and paint. They mainly deal with health products and agricultural places whose products attract great amounts of people. They also test and do research for the government.

What is the Job Outlook?

It was recorded in the year 2000 that there were about 92,000 people holding this career. It is expected to grow as rapidly as all other occupations.
