What is Oceanography?

The Ocean takes up almost three fourths of the Earths surface. It is filled with animals and plants and is perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of nature. The study of the oceans and the plants and animals it contains is called oceanography. A person who studies the oceans and the plants and animals it contains is called an oceanographer.

Are there different types of oceanographers?

Yes, like many other jobs, there are different branches of oceanography. Four types of oceanographers are biological oceanographers, geological oceanographers, marine scientists, and physical oceanographers. Although each division of oceanography works with the ocean, each division also specializes in a certain area. For example, a physical oceanographer monitors the surface and currents of the ocean while a biological oceanographer studies the marine life in the ocean.

How is oceanography realated to chemistry?

Oceanographers use a lot of chemistry. Say there was a chemical spill in the ocean, an oceanographer would need to know how to remove the chemical without damaging the environment around the chemicals location. Also oceanographers use different chemicals to test different samples of water.

What educational background is needed to become and oceanographer?

Oceanographers work with a lot of math and science. If you are thinking about becoming an oceanographer you should try to take as many math and science courses as you can. These courses include: chemistry, physics, calculus, and statistics. In order to do research work for an organization, you need a Doctorate in physics, oceanography, applied mathematics, engineering, earth science or marine science.

What is the average salary of an oceanographer?

An oceanographers salary varies. They usually earn between $50,000 and $80,000 a year. The salary varies according to the experience and qualifications of the oceanographer.

What are the working conditions?

Oceanographers work in many different settings. An oceanographer can work indoors and outdoors, on the ocean and on land, in a lab or on a ship, in hot and cold, in groups or by him/herself, and in the day time or night time.

What is the job outlook?

The oceanographer industry has remained relatively stable over time. As of now, there are neither too many people working in this field, nor too few. There are many different jobs in this field, perhaps the biggest job internationally is trying to find oil and gas deposits.
