After the battle was over General
Howe and his remaining men decided to leave Boston, including about a
thousand loyalists because they were afraid to stay. It took the troops
eleven days to load their ships and collect all their supplies. *"On March 17 the evacuation was complete"( Hepburn, Andrew. Biography of a CityBoston. New York: Scholastic Book Services,1966) The Bostonians which included General Washington and his troops were excited because they defeated the British, and they couldn't wait to enter back into Boston, but because the British had to wait for one right winds before they could deport, the Bostonians were afraid that the British were plotting to attack them, but they weren't. The British finally set sail on the twenty-seventh of March. The British didn't leave
to go to New York like Washington thought they were going to go, instead
the British headed for Halifax, and never returned to Boston. On March 28, the Bostonians celebrated
their defeat. After the British left, the Bostonians noticed the British
left some of their belongings like some stores, ammunition, cannons, and
weapons. These things were useful to the Americans later. aAfter everything was over the Americans rewarded General Washington. They made speeches in his honor, Congress voted him a gold metal, and the Overseers of Harvard College gave him an honorary degree. The degree was of Doctor of Law.
