Assignment

The Old North Bridge, which served as a crucial point for the April 19 fight between Britsh soldiers and American colonists was constructed in 1760. A lottery was held to raise money for the work. The bridge consists of five sets of pilings, with railings on both sides. The simple oak bridge had a loose plank surface. This plank surface could be rearranged by wagon drivers or walkers as necessary. It was these planks that the British soldiers attempted to remove in order to slow down the colonials' march during their historic encounter in 1775. The bridge's history would include the floods, storm damage, decay and bombings that followed its rebuilding.

This bridge symbolizes something to the people. This bridge links the people's past, present and future of their cultures, traditions and history. While only a wooden object, the "rude bridge" symbolizes strength of character and resolve in the accurate and symbolic arching of the many times of hardship. In the past this bridge linked roads, now it links something more important, people's past, present and future.
