Drama and Theatre

Students performing in Catholic Memorial's production of Sherlock Holmes.

Every year all faculty and students attend student performances of local theatre productions.

Mount Alvernia High School has had a longstanding relationship with the New Repertory Theatre in Watertown, MA.  For over a decade MAHS students have been traveling to performances and benefitting from the New Rep Players traveling to 790 Centre Street to perform for our students.  In recent years our students have been an audience for:

  • Of Mice and Men
  • A Midsummer’s Night Dream
  • To Kill a Mockingbird
  • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
  • The Scarlet Letter

Our students have developed a relationship with Catholic Memorial School in West Roxbury and have been actresses in Fall drama productions and Spring Musicals, such as:

  • The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Fall 2014)
  • Shrek the Musical (Spring 2014)
  • It’s a Wonderful Life (Fall 2013)
  • Me and My Girl (Spring 2013)

At the 7th and 8th grade level students work on declamation and poetry recitation in their English classes. These students can opt to attend local Forensic competitions after working with the faculty moderator to practice her performance.

Fine Arts

An Evening for the Arts, held every spring.

The Choir meet weekly. These groups are open to students in grades 7 through 12. The Art Club, which meets weekly, is open to all students. Many students use this time to pursue their own interests or to prepare a portfolio. Students have the opportunity to explore various art media such as oils, watercolors, pastels, ceramics, stained glass and printmaking.

Grade 11 students visit the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum as part of a joint art and history project on the Renaissance.

Every spring we have our Evening of the Arts, a showcase for our artists in residence. Works of art in a variety of mediums are put on display, along with performances at Open Mic.
